It is likely that you currently have a dial up account with an ISP. We suggest you discuss the following options with him first. In the UK, you have 4 options:
- ADSL, this is a broadband (256 or 512 kb or more ) connection which may not be available everywhere, but is very cost effective (especially the “wires only” option). it is an “always on” connection, and is therefore very attractive. To learn more about ADSL and check availability, click here .
- Cable, this is also a broadband connect, and is “always on” it depends where you are in the UK, as to whether Telewest or NTL can provide you with a cable connection. Check with the relevant web sites for availability
- ISDN - this is a 64 kb or 128 kb connection, and the connection is established as required. The connection is established very quickly (unlike a dial up line). Unless you have a flat fee account which does not charge you for the time you are on line, this can be expensive. There is an installation fee as well. For more details, try here.
- Dial up line with modem. This is often no cheaper than an ISDN line (because you are charged for the call), but a bit slower, and can take a few seconds to establish the connection. There is, of course, no installation fee (if you already have telephone lines).
If you are unwilling or unable to get an ADSL or cable connection, then we recommend you investigate the options whereby you do not pay telephone call charges, to read about BT surftime, please click here.
For an ADSL line you will be able to connect your server to the internet using one of the Network interface cards supplied. For the “wires only” service you will need a modem/router as well, such as the AR601 (see here for more details) or the SAR703 (see here) in the latter case you will need a hub as well. The ADSL business packages generally include the router and ADSL modem.
For an ISDN line, you will need a controller card (which we supply), for a dial up modem connection you will need a modem (but you may already have one!).
