We recently installed a Mitel SMEServer in MiddleMarch Environmental’s Kenilworth offices.

Dr Phil Fermor, Consultancy director says :

“The installation went like clockwork, and the server  was up and running in very short time. We needed to centralise  our project documentation, and also give the consultants web  access for research purposes, as well as individual E-mail. Because we are often dealing with large corporates, we need to present a professional interface to our customers. Since the installation, the server has run with no problems, and everyone is delighted with the ease with which they can access shared documents, and handle their E-mail. We can also backup our data with much less effort”.

Here is the full story:

Dr Fermor contacted us last December about the company’s PC network which had become unreliable, a frustration and time-waster for his staff.  For example, PC’s were failing to maintain their connection, E-mail could be picked up by only one PC and then had to be printed and handed on manually to the addressee, and the data backup procedure, using CD’s for each individual computer, was taking a valuable member of staff most of an afternoon.  Dr Fermor was aware that a Microsoft Server solution would involve purchasing costly hardware and involve complex configuration and support expertise which he did not have in-house.  His other concerns were the need to upgrade the software to cope with the new security issues which frequently arise with Microsoft systems, and the additional licensing costs which would come with adding extra users.

By contrast, we provide a prepackaged server solution which does not involve costly configuration and support, and does not incur ongoing licensing costs. We recommended that he purchase a BJ Systems configured Server PC, using the Mitel SMEServer software, which is based on the Linux operating system.  This comes with an integrated backup facility, and the capacity to automatically pick up E-mail and distribute it to the relevant PC.  Linux is well known throughout the computer industry as being fast and reliable, and does not suffer from the constant security alerts that apply to Microsoft systems.

We configured the server at our premises and shipped it to MiddleMarch, who only had to unpack the server, connect it to the network and the Internet (Modem, ADSL, ISDN or cable), and power it up. We provided both telephone support and an installation manual, and provide a free E-mail support service for the life of the product. The cost of one of our fully configured servers is was little more than the cost of one extra PC.

Since the installation of our system, Dr Fermor says that his staff no longer raise complaints about the computer system, and are free to concentrate on the environmental consultancy work they are employed to do.  The server has run non stop, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with no stoppages, and he has added two extra PC’s to the network without any problem.

If the problems MiddleMarch had sound familiar, or if you are thinking to upgrade or extend your computer system, or improve your E-mail and internet usage, we would like to suggest that you first look at our web site, www.abandonmicrosoft.co.uk, E-mail us at sales@bjsystems.co.uk, or call us on 01695 723723.

Pacificstream offer a broad-based service, supplying in-house facilities when appropriate, sourcing additional contractors via competitive quoting, and project managing the complete solution. In this way their customers benefit from their experience and have the opportunity to access all their needs through a single channel.

They recently installed a BJ Systems server at one of their customers, and have another about to be installed. The installation was completed in a couple of hours and we understand that the customer is delighted.

Before taking the BJ Systems server on board, they where very careful about installing servers (especially Microsoft ones), as their experience was that the complexity of the installation of the server tended to cloud the business reasons for the server, resulting in a “technical” installation, rather than one which fitted the commercial requirements of the customer.

If you are a consultant, and want to focus on the business of the customer, rather than the technical details of a server installation, then E-mail us at sales@bjsystems.co.uk, or call us on 01695 723723.
