Spam Filtering
We install the Spamassassin open source package on the SMEserver. This is a well known package that is in use daily by ISPs and end users throughout the world, it is also the basis for a number of commercial products. Spamassassin examines each email as it arrives at the server, and uses many 100s of rules to assess whether it might be spam or not. It also uses a bayesian algorithm to learn what is spam to you and what is not, so it gets better as you use it! A number is assigned to each email, to indicate the likelihood of the contents being spam, and this can be used in your mail program to decide how to handle it. Another option is to divert the spam on the server (and then examine it periodically using the web mail to check that nothing important has crept through).
You can also set up entries in a “blacklist” whereby all emails from a particular domain or address is treated as spam, and a “whitelist” to allow emails through from acceptable sources.
The following two screen captures show the server manager panel that allows Spamassassin to be configured.
